Curriculum Overview

Curriculum Intent
At Summerseat Methodist Primary School, we have designed our curriculum with the intent that our children develop a love of learning and the world around them through providing a clearly structured, engaging and balanced curriculum, allowing all pupils to flourish, reach their full potential and be ready for the challenges of tomorrow. Our curriculum is progressive in key skills and is ‘knowledge rich’. It is cumulative to ensure that children have regular opportunities to revisit and recall key knowledge and deepen their understanding of key concepts through the ‘power of practice’ across all areas of the curriculum enabling children to move from basic, to deeper understanding and into mastery. We recognise our school context and want children to leave us with a strong moral and spiritual compass; respecting and celebrating diversity and promoting care and individuality. We hold high aspirations for all our pupils and want them to grow into successful and responsible adults of the future with a rich ‘cultural capital’ formed through their experience of a high quality, holistic curriculum that has at its heart: key skills, knowledge, broad and engaging experiences and a focus on personal development.


The school vision, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’ motto, Inspired by our faith in God, together we believe, explore, persevere and flourish,’ and values, ‘respect, joy, love, care, trust, forgiveness and equality’ are interwoven within our curriculum intent and design.


Our curriculum is designed and built with the following aims:
• To prepare children for life within and beyond Summerseat; providing opportunities that broaden their horizons and aspirations supporting them to become loving, respectful, successful and responsible adults of the future.
• To provide high quality teaching and learning opportunities to ensure that all pupils receive the highest standard of education that enables them to reach their full potential
• To provide a clearly structured and balanced curriculum that is progressive in skills and ‘knowledge rich’ along with the opportunity for regular practice to ensure children move from basic, to deeper learning, into mastery and greater depth for those who are able to.
• To engage and interest children through learning hooks and high quality books which will foster a love of reading and learning that will last a lifetime.
• To encourage children to independently and collaboratively explore, ask questions and develop resilience by taking a ‘have a go’ attitude knowing that failure is part of the learning process.


We recognise our own school context and have developed three curriculum drivers that shape our curriculum, bring about the aims and values of our school and respond to the particular needs of our school community:


Diversity – which helps children recognise, respect and know differences are positive and that individual characteristics make people unique and everyone should love and be loved. ‘Love your neighbour


Aspiration – which helps children to believe in themselves, build aspirations and know available possibilities for their future lives, so they can live life in its all its fullness. Believe and Flourish


Resilience – which helps children have the confidence to explore learning opportunities both independently and collaboratively taking a ‘have a go attitude’ and knowing that failure is an important part of the learning process. Explore and Persevere

Curriculum Organisation:
This year, we launched our ‘Summerseat Steps in Learning’ curriculum which outlines the broad and balanced curriculum that all our pupils can expect and is underpinned by three curriculum drivers: diversity, aspiration and resilience.


As well as providing a clear curriculum map of key topics and progressive subject content for each year group, the ‘Steps in Learning’ contain a learning skills section to ensure our children are given opportunities to develop the skills and attributes they need to pursue their dreams beyond Summerseat and become life-long learners.


We have mixed age classes and so we operate a two year curriculum cycle which you will see across all our curriculum documents. This year we are working on Cycle A.


The class ‘Steps in Learning’ provide a summary of some of the end points for learning for each class in each year group. Please follow the links at the bottom of this page for our whole school topic overview and ‘Steps in Learning’ for each class.


If you would like further information on subject specific progression, our ‘Steps in Learning’ organised by subject can be found on our subject pages and provide a detailed overview of the progression in skills and knowledge for each curriculum area. These are organised by key concepts. Progression in key skills span over a two-year period so that key concepts are repeated regularly. This ensures this enters children’s long-term memory. Progression in knowledge is organised by class and cycle to support teachers ensuring full coverage of the curriculum and is again organised into key concepts where possible with a focus on providing opportunities within our curriculum design to revisit regularly ensuring learning moves from basic, to deeper, to mastery and to greater depth for those able to.


On the subject pages, you will also find a long term overview of all the topics covered in each subject across the school and termly plans that provide a further detailed breakdown of learning by term. These however, are flexible dependent on class interest and need and are used as a guide. Staff also have unit plans to support them when designing learning journeys for classes that reflect the progressive ‘Steps in Learning’.
